Why is our gut health so important?

Over 70% of our immune system is in our gut. Did you know that? This means that if you want to boost your immune system or take (better) care of your health in general, you should focus on improving your gut health. In the last years research on the gut flora and its connection to our overall health has become more popular than ever and new discoveries are still made. More about this further down in this article.

For a balanced gut flora, a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables is usually enough. However, when traveling or in a particular busy period, it can be good to give your gut flora extra support. During these times, you can complement your diet with a Synbiotic supplement.

What is a synbiotic supplement?

Synbiotics are a mix of good lactic acid bacteria (probiotics) and fibres (prebiotics). Put simply, fibres are food for the bacteria so that they can grow strong and multiply once they reach the gut.

Synbiotic15, as the name implies, is a synbiotic supplement. When you take it on a daily basis, it’ll help to restore and boost your gut health. Every day! This means strengthening your immune system, taking care of simple stomach problems like bloating or digestive issues and preventing inflammation or poor health in general.

How long do you need to take a synbiotic supplement?

Taking care of your gut is a long term investment in yourself and your health. There is no quick fix or one time change. When you start with any new supplement, we recommend you take it for at least 3 months. Take it as prescribed, on a daily basis.

After 3 months you can evaluate how you feel, and what effect the supplement might have had on you. It’s important to remember that some supplements have more subtle and long-term effects. So even if you think you don’t feel any difference, internally a lot might have changed in these 3 months!

How do you know if the supplement is working?

Your gut flora is unique to you – it is often compared to a fingerprint – and the effects of a supplement can therefore differ from person to person. It can also take time for the body to get used to a new supplement, which means that you might need to adjust the dose or take other measures.

This is why we strongly recommend you to try any new supplement for at least three months. When you start taking Synbiotic15 – in the short term you can feel less bloated, have easier bowel movements, better skin and more energy in general. In the long run you’ll strengthen your immune system, reduce inflammation in your body and lower the risk of developing lifestyle diseases. You see how these long term benefits are a lot more subtle? Doesn’t make them less important though – quite the contrary!

And again – you might not feel any changes in the short term or only experience them when you stop taking the supplement.

What are potential side-effects when you take synbiotics?

Just as with any dietary changes, your body and, above all, your digestive system can react when you start taking a synbiotic supplement. In addition, the gut flora looks different from person to person and is therefore very difficult to study. The composition of the gut flora is also influenced by many other factors; what we eat (and what we don’t), how much we move, our quality of sleep, any diseases we have or had, medication we take, other supplements, stress and more. So it’s impossible to give any specifics about how you’ll be affected when taking synbiotics, as it depends entirely on your circumstances and your lifestyle.

We can share some generics thought, about what side-effects you can experience. For starters you can get some (mild) constipation or diarrhoea. Others experience some gassiness, bloating or general stomach discomforts. These discomforts will disappear when your body gets used to the new bacteria and the increased fibre intake. For some this takes a few days, for others, it can take several weeks. Drinking lots of water often helps your body to adjust more easily to the new supplement.

Not everybody will experience these side effects. If you do, and they’re bothering you, please divide the dose during the day and take half the in the morning and the other half in the evening. If you have an upset tummy or a hard stomach, this is usually because the fibres in the product. They’re water-soluble and need more water to pass smoothly through the intestines, so make sure to drink some extra glasses of water.

How did we get started with Synbiotic15?

Research on the gut flora and its connection to overall health is more popular today than ever, ranging from IBS and and chronic inflammation to the gut-brain axis (the link between the gastrointestinal tract and the brain). As it’s a relatively new research field, new discoveries and connections are still made.

Stig Bengmark, Professor of Surgery and Founder of Synbiotic15, studied the gut flora and its effect on human health for the past 30 years. His theories about the gut flora are confirmed both by his own research and others’.

These studies show that the gut flora is tremendously important for our health – 70% of the immune system turns out to be in the gut! This initial finding fuelled Stig’s interest for pursuing further research. He started to investigate the most effective ways to reintroduce good gut bacteria to the gut.

Studies show the gut flora is tremendously important for our health – 70% of the immune system turns out to be in the gut

Stig initiated a research project in 1999 together with a few colleagues. The goal was to identify the elite of the good gut bacteria, bacteria that work together to strengthen the other bacteria’s properties and have an anti-inflammatory effect. He singled out four unique strains of lactic acid bacteria and patented those. The bacteria were then combined with four types of fibre that have shown to help the bacteria to reproduce in the gut. This combinations forms the basis of Synbiotic15.

What is Synbiotic15?

Synbiotic15 is a combination of lactic acid bacteria (probiotics) and fibres (prebiotics). The fibres act as food for the good bacteria, so that they will thrive when they reach the gut.

Synbiotic15 consists of 15 billion, patented lactic acid bacteria and 4 grams of plant fibre per dose. When you take it on a daily basis, it’ll help to restore and boost your gut health. This means strengthening your immune system, taking care of simple stomach problems like bloating or digestive issues and preventing inflammation or poor health in general.

Synbiotic15 is produced in Sweden, is gluten-free and lactose-free.
