From Ecuador to Spain and from Singapore now to Bangkok. Each location gave yoga teacher Miryam Acosta new perspectives on health and inspiration for daily habits. Her definition of being healthy has changed quite a lot from her upbringing in Ecuador. Nowadays Miryam emphasises to her clients it’s more important to focus on how you feel in your body than the number on the scale. It’s also about long-term investments in yourself instead of short-term gains. “Investing in my gut with Synbiotic15 is something I do for the long-term, it’s an important part of my daily routine now and I never want to stop.”
How yoga brought Miryam to Asia
Yoga teacher Miryam Acosta grew up in Ecuador and moved to Spain for her master’s degree. She ended up living there for over 12 years. While working a corporate job in finance, she got into yoga and started teaching classes in the evening. One day her yoga teacher said he had a studio in Singapore and if she was interested in teaching there. Miryam decided it was time for a change, so she took a sabbatical to teach for a year in Singapore and the rest is history so to say. She stayed in Singapore, moved to Bangkok recently and teaching yoga is her full-time job now.
Health ideals when growing up
In South America it’s considered healthy if you eat a lot and are a bit chubby. When you grow up you don’t really know any better so that’s what Miryam thought was normal. When she was around 16 or so, she realized that this is not necessarily healthy living. Miryam felt chubby compared to her friends and it didn’t feel good. As her parents wouldn’t make the changes for her – she decided to take control herself. She took aerobic and steps classes and started seeing results and more importantly, Miryam felt better. She was losing weight, while eating the same things.
This was when Miryam fell in love with fitness and now yoga is her career. She shares, ‘when I see changes happening, I want to study and understand better why that is. This way, I learn more and more and continue to grow and improve myself. I also surround myself with likeminded people which helps with motivation as well as inspiration.’
Healthy living nowadays
About 7 years ago Miryam says she made a conscious decision to be healthier. To her this means taking note of what she eats and regular physical activity. ‘Even when tired, I make sure I move my body. Working out helps me to release any tension I feel that day.’ While she still had a corporate job it was the same – her teaching hour in the evening was Miryam’s happy hour. This is where she relaxed and got grounded. Nowadays exercise is part of her job, and yet she makes it a priority to consciously move every day. ‘I believe in balance, so 6 days a week I’m strict with myself and 1 day a week I don’t think about it. Because the more you restrict yourself, the more you want that thing,’ Miryam says.
‘We all need role models to take inspiration from and I’d like to be that for people.’
To stick to her healthy lifestyle, habits are important. Not necessarily to push herself, but knowing that if she makes these changes, they can become habits and these habits will help her to reach her goals. ‘I love my daily habits – it makes my life easy and if I know something is good for me, I’ll keep doing it. Synbiotic15 is one of these habits. I like it, so I take it every day.’ And whatever new habit or product she discovers; she always shares. This hopefully inspires a friend, client or somebody else who follows Miryam to make a change themselves. ‘We all need role models to take inspiration from and I’d like to be that for people.’
Be patient and know you invest in yourself for the long term
Being a full-time yoga teacher, Miryam works with a lot of students. Whether it’s in big group settings, or smaller retreats. The hardest part for her clients is that it takes time to see results. We’re not patient these days. She continues ‘It’s important to look at other things than just weight or shape of your body when working out. Perhaps you sleep a bit better, or you have more energy. Those are all positive changes from working out and will encourage you to keep going. You just have to see them.’ In addition, as women our hormone cycles that impact our weight. It’s really time to stop thinking the number on the scale determines everything. Yeah, it’s good to know what you weigh, but don’t be too attached to it. It’s much better to look at how you feel in your body, can you do what you want to do, how do you wake up in the morning, how do you feel? That’s what matters.

Miryam’s daily habits that you can start today
Miryam shares her most important daily habits that we can all start with right away. And if you’re a bit patient, you’ll see the results.
Drink a lot of water
‘I finish at least 2l of water a day. To ensure this happens I fill up a 2l water bottle in the morning, and by the end of the day it needs to be empty.’
Take your supplements
‘I take supplements every day and some I’ve been taken for a long time and I don’t think I’ll ever stop them. The most important ones to me are Vitamin C, Magnesium and Synbiotic15.’
‘I exercise a lot as it’s part of my job, so I actually need to make sure I take enough rest. To clients, I always recommend exercising at least 3 times a week, keep the body moving. Whether this is a walk, or to the gym. Move.’
Rest in between
‘It’s important to create a balance between exercising and resting. You can’t always keep pushing your body for more more more. So don’t exercise in excess, your body needs rest to recover.’
Looking after your gut
Miryam is lucky enough not to have stomach or bloating problems. She did have some acidity issues which she links back to the variety of diets she was trying at the time, in combination with periods of fasting. Kombucha is very popular in the yoga community, so she decided to give that a try to support her gut flora better. It helped to stop the acidity, yet it’s a bit time consuming to make yourself and store-bought kombucha’s are often full of sugar. When Miryam tried Synbiotic15 and liked it, she knew she had a new daily habit.
‘Now that we can travel more frequently again, we eat out a lot more’, Miryam says. It also means we eat a lot more food without knowing where it comes from or how it’s prepared. This can be hard on your gut. Taking a gut supplement can help to prevent potential problems. Synbiotic15 is easy to take, just pour it in your mouth, chew it and done. ‘Nowadays,’ Miryam says ‘I don’t think about it. I wake up in the morning, have my breakfast, my supplements including Synbiotic15 and off I go. It’s a habit. It makes me feel good, and it’s a great long-term investment in myself.’
